Sonntagberg Basilica

Church, Historical sites, Scenic lookout

Description

As one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Europe, the Sonntagberg Basilica with its panoramic views is a whole lot closer to heaven.

Spiritual excursion destinations with a view: The Sonntagberg Basilica - a landmark of the Lower Austrian Mostviertel region that can be seen from afar - offers a wonderful view over the entire region. The place high up on the Sonntagberg has been consecrated for many centuries: the first chapel was built here back in 1440.

Today's minor basilica with its striking two towers was designed by the world-famous baroque master builders Jakob Prandtauer and Josef Mungenast. Thanks to its long history, exceptional location and very special atmosphere, the church is one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in the whole of Central Europe.

Visitors will find historical sights such as old frescoes by Daniel Gran or the legendary Turkish fountain. The Sonntagberg Treasury Museum is hidden behind the high altar of the baroque basilica: the exhibition, which is accessible from the outside, displays a colorful collection of votive offerings from pilgrims as well as valuable priestly vestments and miracle books.

The panoramic high-altitude trail on the Sonntagberg invites you to hike with a view - and the forest nature trail with playground is perfect for a family walk. Guests are also welcomed with pilgrimage information, guided tours, a nostalgia store with beautiful souvenirs and a café.
