Basilika Mariazell

Church

Description

The basilica has been one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Europe for over 860 years and attracts many thousands of pilgrims.
The pilgrimage church, which has been a basilica since 1907, was built in several phases. Nothing remains of the first Romanesque church. The second, three-aisled Gothic church became too small for the pilgrimage during the Counter-Reformation. The present basilica was created in its basic form through extensions in the Baroque period under the famous master builder of St. Lambrecht (mother monastery) Domenico Sciassia. The most extensive restoration and redesign, including the new altar for celebrations, four organs and the overall architecture of the interior and exterior, was carried out between 1992 and 2007 (jubilee year) under architect Wolfgang Feyferlik.
