Kirche Aschbach
Church
Description
The parish of Aschbach was first mentioned in a document in 823, when Emperor Louis the Pious confirmed a territorial pledge made by his father, Charlemagne, to the Bishop of Passau. The first Christian church was built on the remains of a Roman building, with St. Martin as the parish patron saint. After the foundation of Seitenstetten Abbey in 1112, Aschbach was placed under the control of the new monastery in 1116 and finally came into its possession in 1520. The Reformation led to considerable unrest, which was only ended by the Counter-Reformation under Habsburg pressure.
In the 18th century, the church underwent baroqueization, which was tempered by Josephine reforms. Around 1900, the baroque furnishings were removed and replaced with neo-Gothic elements, including altars, stained glass windows and statues of saints. The tower was given a new copper roof and the church staircase was rebuilt. The last comprehensive renovation of the church, which included both the exterior and the interior, took place in 1995.
