Pfarrkirche Grünau zum Hl. Georg

Church

Description

The Grünau parish church is dedicated to St. George (name feast on April 23). He is the patron saint of miners, gunsmiths, artists, farmers, blacksmiths, saddlers and scouts. The church probably originated from a chapel in the former castle of the Lords of Hofstetten. The nave of the church was probably a Romanesque pillar basilica. The presbytery was built in the late Gothic style. The choir and tower date from the late Gothic period. The presbytery and tower are almost the same height, the older nave is lowered. The high altar features the most famous work of art in the parish church, the painting "Battle of St. George with the Dragon" by the artist "Kremser Schmidt".
The nave, the oldest part of the parish church, was probably built around 1100 and is considered the oldest church building in the upper Pielach Valley. On the front left wall of the church is a marble gravestone (from around 1482), which is already very worn. This gravestone is of great cultural and historical significance for the community. The red marble stone also shows the Mainburg coat of arms: a wooden mallet. This coat of arms can still be seen today in the municipal coat of arms of Hofstetten-Grünau.
The parish church has already been redesigned, modernized and rebuilt several times. Most recently, the interior of Grünau parish church was completely renovated in 2021.
