Details for: Sonntagberg route 3rd stage: from Aschbach to Sonntagberg

Brief description

The hilly landscape of the Mostviertel is especially known for its apples and pears and, of course, the cider. What few people know is that there are also magnificent pilgrimage churches here, such as the parish church of Krenstetten, the Seitenstetten Abbey, or the Sonntagberg Basilica.

Description

From Aschbach-Markt, this stage of the Sonntagberg route leads us southwest past Schramelhof and Wipfelhof, and after a not too long hike, we reach the small community of Krenstetten with its beautiful pilgrimage church dedicated to Saint Mary. Beyond the hamlets of Markstein and Bierbaumdorf, we cross the Url, walk along railway tracks for some time, and shortly after reach the so-called "Vierkanter Gottes", the Benedictine Abbey Seitenstetten. The monastery, located in the midst of the Mostviertel hilly landscape, has shaped people, culture, and nature for centuries and houses baroque art treasures as well as a particularly beautiful historic monastery garden with themed gardens and paths (e.g., the "Via Rosa"). Passing between the abbey and the monastery garden, we leave Seitenstetten along a narrow birch-lined road and then turn left onto a path bordered by pear trees. At Hofing, a longer ascent to Blümelsberg (526m) begins. We pass traditional four-corner farms, pear trees, and a deer enclosure and enjoy a wonderful view of the surrounding landscape. At the Karl-Lammerhuber viewpoint (large stone by the roadside), we enjoy a magnificent view of Biberbach and the gentle hill landscape of the Mostviertel before starting the descent and continuing towards Rosenau. In Rosenau, a visit to the Military History Museum is highly recommended before the strenuous ascent to Sonntagberg. But at the top, tired pilgrims are richly rewarded for their efforts by the magnificent sight of the Sonntagberg pilgrimage basilica and can first enjoy the splendid views.
