Orientation along the path
Using orientation aids correctly
The Via Sacra and the Vienna Pilgrimage Trail are marked throughout with yellow signposts. In addition, there are also markings in red-white-red and/or yellow & purple.
The signposting is checked and maintained at regular intervals and renewed if necessary. Nevertheless, it can always happen that a signpost is lost, a sign has become misaligned or the writing on it simply is no longer legible. For this reason, it is generally advisable to make use of a secondary orientation aid. This can be a guidebook in printed form or a smartphone app.
Hiking guide
The „Via Sacra / Wiener Wallfahrerweg“ guidebook by Hikeline (only available in German) was developed by Esterbauer publishers and has already been reissued several times. It contains detailed descriptions of the routes and corresponding maps. Complete with altitude profiles, descriptions of the different alternative routes and illustrations of points of interest along the routes, it is a comprehensive source of information for pilgrims. The hiking guide is available in bookshops or directly at the Mostviertel Tourist Board.
"Pilgern in Niederösterreich" app (German only)
The intuitive app (available in German only) serves as a hiking map and a pilgrimage guide. In addition to detailed maps and tour descriptions (incl. stage suggestions), the app can be used to display and search for points of interest such as eating & drinking options as well as accommodation options, sights and useful infrastructure such as shopping facilities, pharmacies, drinking fountains and public toilets.
