Pfarrkirche Hl. Magarete
Church
Description
The church of Ardagger Abbey is the jewel of the parish. The consecration of the church on September 4, 1063 became an outstanding event due to the presence of the most important personalities of the empire. The crypt, the medieval cloister and the famous St. Margaret's Window are remarkable.
Historical records show that the Romans erected a watchtower to protect the Danube border of Noricum around 200 AD. On January 7, 1049, Emperor Henry III founded a college of priests in honour of the holy martyr Margaret at the request of his wife Agnes of Poitou. The famous Margaret window, which was installed around 1238, depicts the life of this saint and is one of the oldest church windows in Central Europe.
The collegiate monastery comprised the parishes of Ardagger Markt, Ardagger Stift, Kollmitzberg, Stephanshart and Zeillern and was run by provosts until it was dissolved by Emperor Joseph II on January 12, 1782. Since then, Ardagger Abbey has been an ordinary parish, with the title of titular provost being awarded to deserving priests of the diocese of St. Pölten.
Since September 2011, the parish community of Ardagger has also included the parish of Markt Ardagger, alongside the parishes of Stift Ardagger, Kollmitzberg and Stephanshart.
