Wallfahrtskirche Hafnerberg

Church, Historical sites, Monastery / abbey

Description

The baroque pilgrimage church "Zu unserer lieben Frau" on the Hafnerberg is located directly on Austria's oldest pilgrimage route - the Via Sacra from Vienna to Mariazell in Styria.

As early as the mid-17th century, a statue of the Virgin Mary was erected on the site, to which pilgrims liked to pray. Due to the increasing popularity of this pilgrimage site, the foundation stone for a large church was laid in 1729 by Abbot Ildephons von Mannagetta.
The construction was largely driven forward by the Viennese bourgeois family Petras and was largely completed in 1745. The church subsequently became something of an outpost of Mariazell Abbey in the Vienna Woods and still houses sculptures and paintings by important artists today.

Particularly impressive is the dome fresco - probably the most important sacred work by Joseph Ignaz Mildorfer (1719-1775). This represents an absolute highlight of Baroque fresco painting in Austria. The recently renovated, unique Johann Pfliegler organ from 1767 now sounds as beautiful as it did in the year it was built and is now also used for baroque organ concerts.
