Details for: Via Sacra: Stage 2/5: Heiligenkreuz - Altenmarkt - Kaumberg
Brief description
Heiligenkreuz – Mayerling – Maria Raisenmarkt – Holzschlag – Hafnerberg– Thenneberg – Kaumberg
Description
From Heiligenkreuz it continues near the road to Mayerling (01:15 h). Here you encounter the former hunting lodge of Crown Prince Rudolph. Today, there is also a Carmelite convent here. From now on, the route partly follows paved paths and field paths to Maria Raisenmarkt and further uphill through the forest to Holzschlag (02:00 h). To the left, the hiking trail leads to Peilstein. However, you turn right and go downhill to Nöstach and reach the Pilgrimage Church Hafnerberg (01:15 h). The valley section of the Via Sacra runs via Altenmarkt and Thenneberg (Pilgrimage Church in the Dornau). On the paved bike path along the Triesting River, you finally reach Kaumberg, although for the last few kilometers you can walk on a forest path on the left mountain slope instead of beside the road (03:15 h). If time is tight, you can also take a shorter route along the bike path next to the federal road to Kaumberg.
Variant via Klein-Mariazell: From Hafnerberg over scenic high paths to the reactivated monastery Klein-Mariazell and further along St. Corona Street to Kaumberg (18.9 km, 06:15 h).
