Details for: Via Sacra: Stage 2/5: Heiligenkreuz - Altenmarkt - Kaumberg (RSAT09)

Brief description

Heiligenkreuz - Mayerling - Maria Raisenmarkt - Holzschlag - Hafnerberg- Thenneberg - Kaumberg

Description

From Heiligenkreuz, continue along the road to Mayerling (01:15 h). Here you come across the former hunting lodge of Crown Prince Rudolph. Today there is also a Carmelite convent here. From now on, you walk partly on asphalt paths or dirt tracks to Maria Raisenmarkt and continue uphill through the forest to Holzschlag (02:00 h). The hiking trail to the left leads to Peilstein. However, you branch off to the right and walk downhill to Nöstach and reach the Hafnerberg pilgrimage church (01:15 h). The valley section of the Via Sacra runs via Altenmarkt and Thenneberg (pilgrimage church in the Dornau). The asphalted cycle path along the Triesting finally takes you to Kaumberg, where you can walk the last few kilometers on a forest path on the left mountain slope instead of next to the road (03:15 h). If you are already running out of time, you can also take a shorter route via the cycle path along the main road to Kaumberg.

Variant via Klein-Mariazell: From Hafnerberg via scenic mountain paths to the once again active Klein-Mariazell Abbey and along the St. Corona road to Kaumberg (18.9 km, 06:15 h).
