Details for: Viennese Pilgrims' Way: Stage 3/5: Kaumberg - Rohr
Brief description
Kaumberg – Araburg – Kieneck – Unterberg – Rohr im Gebirge
Description
This stage is challenging and requires stamina and fitness: Across the mountains, several ascents and descents total 1,309 meters in elevation gain and 24.9 kilometers in length! From Kaumberg, you can easily reach the picturesque ruins of Araburg. Shortly afterwards, the Viennese Pilgrims' Way leaves the shared route with the Via Sacra (which continues into the Gölsental valley to Hainfeld) and turns southward towards Rohr im Gebirge. This is followed by a longer solitary ridge hike with steep ascents over Veiglkogel and Reingupf to Kieneck with the Gentian Hut (04:45 h). You are now on alpine terrain over 1,000 meters above sea level. Be cautious in bad weather. After the Gentian Hut, the alpine terrain continues to the Bettelmann Cross and the shelter on Unterberg (02:45 h). Here you have reached the alpine highlight of this tour. Then it goes down forest paths into the valley to the former Gries inn and alongside the road further to Rohr im Gebirge (03:15 h).
